Yellowcreek Stories: The Cabin Watcher is out now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, bringing classic '80s slasher horror into a first-person stealth game where getting caught by the masked killer outside means you probably won't be finishing that novel.
Developed by solo developer Carlos Azuaga and published by JanduSoft, The Cabin Watcher puts you in the role of a writer who retreats to an isolated mountain cabin looking for inspiration.
Instead, you get a masked stranger carrying a massive machete.
And unlike plenty of horror games where the solution eventually becomes finding a weapon and fighting back, there's no combat here. Your best weapon is making sure the killer doesn't find you in the first place.
That's where things get interesting.
The killer actively reacts to sound, light, and movement, meaning even simple decisions can potentially give away your location. Make too much noise and he'll hear you. Leave yourself exposed with a light source and he can see you. Start sprinting around the cabin in a panic and you've potentially made an already terrible situation even worse.
Basically, all the things I'd immediately do after seeing a machete-wielding man outside my window.
Players have to carefully manage their surroundings, move quietly, use their flashlight strategically, and find somewhere to hide when things go wrong. The enemy searches according to your behavior rather than simply following a predetermined path, turning encounters into a tense game of cat and mouse.
There's even a minimal HUD providing real-time noise and visibility feedback, so you'll have some idea of just how terrible your latest decision was.
The whole experience is heavily inspired by classic 1980s slasher movies, right down to its dark, gritty VHS-style atmosphere. You've got the stormy night, isolated cabin, masked killer, oversized murder weapon, and one very unfortunate person who probably should have booked a hotel instead.
It's a simple premise, but that's part of what makes it interesting. Instead of building an enormous horror world filled with dozens of monsters, The Cabin Watcher focuses on the fear of knowing one person is hunting you and paying attention to everything you do.
For indie horror fans, it's also worth noting that this comes from a solo developer, which makes the scope of the project even more impressive.
And the price makes this one pretty easy to take a chance on.
