And this time we've apparently given them modern technology to work with.
The fifth film in the cult horror-comedy franchise updates the absurd premise for 2026 with a story involving biotechnology, genetic engineering, and artificial intelligence, while still embracing the goofy personality that made Attack of the Killer Tomatoes such a bizarre piece of horror history.
The story follows a young biotech prodigy who genetically engineers a vegetable designed to help solve some of humanity's biggest problems.
Which sounds great.
Until the vegetables decide humanity might actually be the problem.
The experiment spirals out of control and unleashes a new generation of killer tomatoes, once again leaving humanity to deal with the consequences of apparently not learning anything from the previous four movies.
Honestly, at this point we deserve whatever the tomatoes do to us.
Professor Gangreen Is Back
One of the coolest parts of this revival is that it isn't completely starting over.
John Astin returns as Professor Gangreen, bringing one of the franchise's most memorable characters back for another encounter with the murderous produce.
He's joined by a cast that includes David Koechner, Eric Roberts, Catherine Corcoran, Dan Bakkedahl, Myrna Velasco, Vernée Watson, Paul Bates, Zachary Roozen, Samantha Bailey, and Noor Razooky.
For longtime fans, Astin's return gives Organic Intelligence a direct connection to the wonderfully weird franchise that came before it.

Nearly 50 Years of Killer Produce
The original Attack of the Killer Tomatoes arrived in 1978 and somehow turned the idea of homicidal tomatoes into an entire franchise.
What started as an intentionally ridiculous horror-comedy eventually spawned multiple sequels, an animated television series, a video game, and became an enduring cult favorite.
It even became part of George Clooney's early career, with the future movie star appearing in 1988's Return of the Killer Tomatoes!.
Now, nearly five decades after the original movie, the franchise gets another chance to introduce audiences to one of horror's strangest threats.
The newly released trailer appears to understand exactly what kind of movie this needs to be. Rather than trying to turn Killer Tomatoes into something dark and serious, Organic Intelligence leans into the franchise's campy horror-comedy roots while giving the concept a modern spin.
Even the film's retro-inspired poster looks like it could have been pulled straight from the painted movie poster era of the late '70s and '80s.
