All those years watching horror movies are finally about to pay off.
The Boy From Below is available On Demand starting today, August 11, sending a horror movie nerd straight into the kind of slasher she's spent countless hours watching from behind the counter of a video store.
Set on Halloween night in 1997, the indie horror throwback follows Quinn Curtis, a B-movie horror fanatic managing a local video store alongside her grandmother. While the town of Carpenter Falls celebrates spooky season, Quinn's Halloween takes a considerably darker turn when something violent from the town's murderous past returns.
And this killer apparently knows his horror movies too.
Welcome to Your Own Slasher Movie
A masked killer begins targeting Quinn and her friends, picking them off one by one while attempting to bring his own twisted horror movie fantasies to life.
Suddenly Quinn isn't recommending slashers from behind the video store counter anymore. She's living in one.
The killer even arrives with a creepy truck to complete the package, leaving Quinn to put all that horror knowledge to practical use if she wants to make it through Halloween night.
It's a fun setup for anyone who's ever watched a slasher and yelled at the characters for making the worst possible decision. We all think we'd know better. Don't investigate the strange noise. Don't wander off alone. Definitely don't assume the masked killer is dead after knocking him down once.
Quinn might finally get the opportunity to prove whether being a horror nerd actually helps when the knives come out.
A Throwback Packed With Horror Veterans
The 1997 setting also lets The Boy From Below lean directly into the video store era of horror, when discovering a new movie meant wandering through shelves of VHS boxes and picking something because the cover looked sufficiently horrifying.
Spooky Madison leads the cast as Quinn, joined by a lineup containing plenty of familiar names for genre fans.
Dee Wallace, whose horror credits include Cujo, The Howling, and Critters, appears alongside Sleepaway Camp star Felissa Rose. The cast also includes Tommy Lee Wallace, Chaney Morrow, Richie Ramone, Leah Voysey, and Jack Norman.
Directed by Tory Jones, the film comes from Jonestown Films with Epic Pictures handling its release. It runs approximately 97 minutes and carries a TV-14 rating.
Between the Halloween-night setting, video store nostalgia, masked killer, and a protagonist who actually understands the genre she's been dropped into, The Boy From Below sounds like it knows exactly which crowd it's playing to.
If your idea of a good time involves VHS tapes, final girls, Halloween night, and somebody realizing they've somehow wandered into their own slasher movie, this might be one to add to tonight's watchlist.
